BERMUDA STATUTORY INSTRUMENT

PUBLIC HEALTH (KEEPING OF PIGS) REGULATIONS 1958 [made under sections 167(3) and 170 of the Public Health Act 1949 [title 11 item 1] and brought into operation on 1 April 1958]

Licence to keep pigs
1 No person shall keep two or more pigs (exclusive of pigs under the age of three months) on any one property unless he is in possession of a valid licence issued by the Minister and any person contravening this regulation shall be deemed to commit an offence against the Public Health Act 1949 [title 11 item 1].
Issue and revocation
2 Licences issued under these regulations shall be valid for a period of one year from the date of issue and may be revoked at any time by the Minister upon his being satisfied that the licensee has not complied with the requirements laid down in these regulations,

Application for licence
3 Every application for the issue or renewal of a licence shall state the approximate number of pigs which the applicant proposes to keep during the ensuing year and the location and description of the sty or sties, with particular reference to the size, construction and materials of the sty or sties, the means of drainage therefrom and the quantity of suitable water which would be readily available at all times for the cleaning of the sty or sties.
Conditions of issue
4 No licence shall be issued under these regulations unless the Minister is satisfied that the premises to be provided and their amenities are suitable for the number of pigs which it is proposed to keep on the property.
Duties of licensee
5 The licensee shall ensure that—
(a) the sty or sties are at all times maintained in a clean condition;
(b) all swill fed to the pigs shall be kept in sound containers which have well fitting lids and which are capable of being easily and properly cleaned; and
(c) all swill fed to pigs shall be boiled before feeding and shall not be stored for more than twenty-four hours.
Steam cooker
6 A licensee who keeps twelve or more pigs on any one property shall install a steam cooker for boiling garbage or swill.
Sickness of pigs to be reported
7 Every person who keeps pigs shall inform the Government Veterinary Officer as soon as any sickness appears amongst them.
Inspection of premises
8 The licensee shall allow reasonable access to an officer of the Health Department to inspect the premises and shall comply with any instructions issued by the Minister—
(a) for the removal of any accumulation, deposit or drainage arising from the keeping of pigs;
(b) for the prevention of breeding of flies and other insects; or
(c) for the maintenance of the sty or sties in a sanitary condition.
