REGULATIONS FOR THE AWARD OF THE COLONIAL POLICE LONG SERVICE MEDAL

[made by His Excellency the Governor under the authority of Royal Warrants dated the 21st March, 1956 and 14th July, 1972 and brought into operation on 15 July 1972

Service required

1 The Colonial Police Long Service Medal will be granted as a reward for long service and good conduct to members of all ranks of the Bermuda Police Service who on or after the 21st March, 1956, shall have completed eighteen years' continuous service as hereinafter defined. A Clasp will also be granted to a recipient of the Medal on his completing twenty-five years' qualifying service, and a further clasp on completing thirty years' qualifying service. For each Clap so awarded a small silver rose may be added to the ribbon when worn alone. [regulation 1 amended by 1997 : 37 effective by notice in Official Gazette]

1989 Revision 1 REGULATIONS FOR THE AWARD OF THE COLONIAL POLICE LONG SERVICE MEDAL

Continuity of service

2 Service in the Civil Police Forces of other Colonies, Associated States or Territories under Her Majesty's Protection or Administration may be allowed to reckon towards the required period of qualifying service, as may also service which would reckon as qualifying service for the Police Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, if the total period of such service amounts to not less than eighteen years; provided however, that where service has been rendered in Bermuda and in one or more of the territories defined above an interval not exceeding twelve months between any two periods of service shall not be regarded as breaking the continuity of such service; provided also that a break in service not exceeding six calendar months in Bermuda or in any one territory as defined above shall not be regarded as breaking the continuity of such service. Service in Her Majesty's Armed Forces or Merchant Navy whether on secondment or recall or when called upon to serve may be allowed to reckon towards the required period of qualifying service, provided that such military or Merchant Navy service interrupted and was continuous with qualifying Police service.

3. Exemplary character

(1) For the purpose of these Regulations service shall be reckoned as qualifying service only if it is certified that the character and conduct of the person recommended for the grant of the medal or Clasp has been exemplary.

(2) In this regulation the expression "exemplary character means that the person recommended —

(a) shall not have had more than one report for drunkenness or insobriety during the whole of his service; and

(b) shall not have had more than three reports (including any for drunkenness or insobriety) which shall the have been dealt with otherwise than by a caution, during the whole of his service.

Recommending authority

4 Recommendations for the award of the Medal or Clasp shall be submitted by the Commissioner of Police to the Governor. The Medal will be awarded on the authority of the Governor and a notification of such award shall be published in the Gazette.

5. Forfeiture and restoration

(1) A recipient of the Medal or Clasp who is convicted of a criminal offence or is dismissed or removed from the Police Service for

misconduct shall forfeit the medal or clasp unless the Governor shall otherwise direct.

(2) A medal or Clasp so forfeited may be restored to the recipient by the Governor at his discretion.

(3) A notice of forfeiture or restoration shall in every case be published in the Gazette. [regulation 5 amended by 1997 : 37 effective by notice in Official Gazette]

Replacement after loss

6 In the event of the loss of a medal or clasp, and replacement being desired, a declaration shall be made before a Magistrate stating the circumstances under which such loss occurred, and the rank and name of the person to whom the Medal or Clasp belonged. The declaration shall be forwarded to the Governor and if the explanation as to the loss is considered satisfactory by him the Medal or Clasp will be replaced on payment by the person concerned of the cost of such replacement.
