HEALTH INSURANCE (MENTAL ILLNESS, ALCOHOL AND DRUG ABUSE) REGULATIONS 1973

Treatment of patients for mental disorder at the general hospital
1 Standard health benefit shall include the following treatment at the general hospital for the treatment of a person suffering from mental disorder—
(a) in-patient treatment (including the cost of accommodation, meals, nursing and ancillary services) of acute cases of mental illness, including those caused by alcohol and drug abuse;
(ab) in-patient treatment in respect of desensitisation injections or other treatments for cases of alcohol and drug abuse;
(b) out-patient treatment in respect of desensitisation injections for cases of alcohol and drug abuse and other psychotic conditions, electroconvulsive therapy and electroencephalograms, [Regulation 1 amended by 1998:32 effective 13 July 1998; para (ab) inserted by BR 21/2004 effective 1 April 2004; Regulation 1 amended by 2019 : 18 s.15 effective 1 June 2019]

Limitation of benefit
2 In respect of in-patient treatment benefit under regulation 1 shall not apply—
(a) to treatment for any period in excess of 40 days in any calendar year;
(b) unless not less than 45 contributions under the Contributory Pensions Act
1970 [title 18 item 7] have been paid by, or in respect of or credited to, the patient in the twelve months immediately preceding the date of treatment. [Regulation 2 amended by BR 9/1996 effective 1 April 1996]
