LAW LIBRARY RULES 1976

[made under section 6 of the Law Library Act 1910 [title 8 item 6] and brought into operation on 26 June 1976]

Interpretation

1 In these Rules the expression — "book" includes a document; "entitled person" means either —

(a) a Judge, magistrate or court officer; or

(b) a barrister and attorney or a person authorized by him to use the Library for the purposes of his legal practice.

2. Who may use the Library

(1) Subject to these Rules, any entitled person shall have access as of right to the Library at any time, provided that he shall observe the security rules instituted by the Registrar and at any time in force.

(2) A person other than entitled person shall not have the like access as of right, but may, either generally or in any particular instance, be permitted during normal office hours access to the Library by the Registrar subject to such conditions as the Registrar may impose.

(3) Any person's right provided for by paragraph (1), or any permission granted to a person under paragraph (2), may be revoked in the case of that person by the Registrar at any time upon the directions of the Law Library Committee, if the Committee are satisfied that the right or permission ought to be revoked on account of the behaviour of that person in the Library on any occasion or occasions.

Loss of books; civil debt

3 If any Library book is lost or damaged by any person, the or damage may be recovered from him by the Registrar, on behalf of the Law Library Committee, as a civil debt.

No smoking

4 No person shall smoke in the Library.

Closing

5 The Registrar may at any time close the Library upon the directions of the Law Library Committee.

6. Offences

(1) Any revocation of a right or permission under rule 2(3) shall include an express direction by the Registrar that the person to whom the revocation relates shall not enter the Library, or remain in it, while the revocation is in force.

(2) The Registrar may direct any person who—

(a) smokes in the Library contrary to rule 4; or

(b) enters or is in the Library when it is closed pursuant to rule 5, to leave the Library forthwith.

(3) If any person to whom a direction is given under paragraph

(1) or (2) refuses or fails to comply with the direction, the refusal or failure shall be deemed to be an interference with the carrying on of a public activity in public premises within section 20 of the Summary Offences Act 1926 [title 8 item 33].
